Staff and Faculty Training Requirements

As part of a campus wide effort to prevent and address sexual violence and sexual harassment, all university employees are required to complete sexual harassment and sexual violence awareness and prevention education courses. These programs  provide information on preventing and responding to sexual harassment and sexual violence  including what each of us can to do to make our UC campus culture safer for all.

Faculty and Supervisors

Under California law and UC requirements, all faculty and staff supervisors are required to complete two hours of sexual harassment prevention education every two years. New faculty and supervisors are required to complete the education requirement within 90 days of hire, and biannually after that.

The curriculum is designed to meet all legal and UC policy requirements, including training on Responsible Employee reporting obligations for sexual violence and sexual harassment. Other broader protected category discrimination and harassment areas are covered, such as  harassment based on gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation, and retaliation. The content targets the broad variety of  educational contexts in which UC faculty and staff supervisors operate, including administrative work, research, teaching, and advising students. The primary vehicle for this mandatory education is an online program.

Note: Completion of this and other compliance training will impact salary increase eligibility for non-represented staff members.

For managers or supervisors, eligibility for future salary increases is also contingent upon each of their direct reports completing their assigned training as well.

How to complete the online program:

Faculty and supervisors will need to take the following eCourse assigned to your Learming Management System profile: UC Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training for Supervisors and Faculty (course code: AB1825-BE-ECO-2016).

In order to receive credit for the course, the “Assignment Status” will need to be “Acquired.” Here’s how to check on the Assignment Status (link)

Other Mandatory Education Requirements:

Supplementing the biannual requrement, faculty and supervisors will receive other violence prevention training on an annual basis reminding them of their obligation and processes for notifying Title IX offices about sexual violence and sexual harassment.

In addition to these educational requirements that emanate from California law and UC Policy, certain employees must take additional, required training. For example, the NCAA policy requires Intercollegiate Athletic coaches and staff to undergo specialized education in SVSH and other climate issues.

Staff and academic appointees who are not supervisors

Staff who are not supervisors will be required to complete sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention training. UC’s systemwide staff training and education program requires new employees to receive training within the first six weeks of hire. All staff will receive training annually. The new training will include information on their responsibility to report sexual violence and sexual harassment if the incident involves a student.

In addition these requirements, which emanate from California State law, some employees must take additional, required training. For example, the NCAA policy requires Intercollegiate Athletic coaches and staff to undergo specialized education in SVSH and other climate issues.

NCAA-required training for Intercollegiate Athletics coaches and administrative staff

The NCAA Board of Governors Policy on Campus Sexual Violence (link) requires that all student-athletes, coaches and staff are educated each year on sexual violence prevention, intervention and response, to the extent allowable by state law and collective bargaining agreements. All Intercollegiate Athletics department coaches and administrative staff must complete an online program, made available by the department. Additional educational programs and tools will be made available annually.
