Prevention Education Requirements

At Berkeley, our most important values include treating one another with respect, honesty, and integrity. Our campus strives to foster inclusivity, as well as our students’ physical and mental well-being. The University believes that harm and violence have no place at Cal, including hate or bias-related incidents, sexual violence, dating/intimate partner violence, stalking, bullying, and hazing. 

All incoming first-year and transfer undergraduate students are required to complete multiple training sessions in order to be able to register for classes for the spring semester. This includes:

For Spring 2020 incoming first-year and transfer undergraduate students

• ACTION ITEM: Online training: Please take the required online training prior to your arrival on campus. You can access the online training through CalCentral (calcentral.berkeley.edu(link is external)).

  
  

  • Undergraduate Prevention Education will help you understand University policies, resources, and ways in which you can be an active bystander and community leader in preventing sexual harassment and violence in our community. This new undergraduate prevention training became available via CalCentral (link is external)starting December 11 (live now), and must be completed by January 10.

  In-person prevention education: In addition to online training there will be an in-person presentation and an interactive component. Bear Pact addresses sexual violence and harassment, mental health, and use of alcohol and other drugs, and occurs on campus during Golden Bear Orientation. In addition, students will also engage in a small group dialogue. No other action is needed on your part for this requirement other than to attend Golden Bear Orientation.

  
  As a reminder, if you do not complete the requirements by their deadlines, you will face administrative blocks and will not be able to register for classes for the fall 2020 semester.

For Graduate Students - Fall 2019

All incoming graduate and professional students are required to complete:

(1) an online training module*: We have partnered with EVERFI to provide an online prevention program called “Sexual Assault Prevention for Graduate Students.” This training will be made available in your CalCentral Dashboard on August 1, 2019 and must be completed before the start of instruction.

(Note that this online training is different from other online training requirements for students who are GSIs or other campus employees. Completion of one kind of training does not substitute for completion of any other, as each is designed specifically to address different roles and responsibilities.)

(2) an in-person training* — to be completed within the first six weeks of the start of your program. 

Students in online-only programs are exempt from this requirement.

For Students Entering Summer 2019: Students in programs that begin during the summer term will be expected to complete the training within six weeks of the start of their program. These trainings will be coordinated by your home department. Please check in with your program administrators for details.

For Students Entering Fall 2019: In-person trainings will be provided at New Graduate Student Orientation and at select department orientations. Register for a session here(link is external). In-person training must be completed by October 4, 2019. If you do not complete the in-person training by the end of the 6th week of the semester, a hold will be placed on your enrollment for Spring 2020.

For Students Entering Spring 2019 and Prior: In order to clear an enrollment hold due to an incomplete in-person training requirement, please email gradlife@berkeley.edu(link sends e-mail) for options.

Continuing Undergraduate, Graduate, and Professional Students

All students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional students) are required to complete an annual refresher training with prevention and response resources.

The NCAA Board of Governors Policy on Campus Sexual Violence requires that all student-athletes, coaches and staff are educated each year on sexual violence prevention, intervention and response, to the extent allowable by state law and collective bargaining agreements. All Intercollegiate Athletics department coaches and administrative staff must complete an online program, made available by the department. Additional educational programs and tools will be made available annually.

Sexual violence and sexual harassment are crimes which can have a long lasting negative impact on health, well being, and academic success. To foster a safe living and learning environment, all entering students must complete mandatory education programming on sexual violence and sexual harassment.

Yes. All continuing students are required to complete this annual refresher. The Graduate Division and the Office of the Dean of Students will communicate with students who do not complete the annual refresher.

A cross-section of UC Berkeley departments have collaborated to enhance prevention campus-wide for a number of years. Since 2014, there have been enhancements and new requirements for students, staff, and faculty. This new annual refresher is the continuation of those prevention efforts. At UC Berkeley, all of our community--students, staff, and faculty alike--complete an annual training.

The annual refresher training is required for all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students (other than those who have completed new student prevention education within the last two semesters).

Students failing to complete programs will have a hold placed on their registration. The hold restricts student access to student services (e.g.UHS, RSF, libraries, parking/transit, etc) and can delay financial aid disbursement if the hold is not resolved. The hold will also impact enrolling in classes. The hold will stay in place until the requirement is completed. More information can be found at registrar.berkeley.edu(link is external)

Yes, and it's important to understand all the requirements that pertain to you, and how they differ.

All employees of the University are required to take the UC Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training that is designed specifically for employees. This online module is in addition to the prevention education for incoming students. An email with a personalized link to the training will be sent to you directly from the UCB Learning Center.

In addition, every first-time Graduate Student Instructor must also successfully complete the online course Professional Standards and Ethics for GSIs (which includes a module on sexual harassment and sexual violence) before they interact with students (either in person or online) in their role as an instructor. The GSI online ethics course module differs from the other trainings in that it focuses on sexual harassment issues as they may arise in the course of a GSI’s duties.
